Distinguished and Famous people from Leongatha
🌟 Eleanor Patterson
Eleanor Patterson’s high-jump career began after a childhood sleepover, when she accompanied a friend to Little Athletics. Born and raised in Leongatha, she trained on grass because the nearest suitable synthetic facility was an hour away. Encouragement from a local primary-school teacher and the example of other country athletes helped sustain her ambitions. She won Commonwealth Games gold in 2014 while still at school and became world champion in 2022. Her story gives Leongatha more than a birthplace entry: local schools, a junior club and the practical limits of country training were all part of her development.
🌟 Jarryd Roughead
Jarryd Roughead came to Hawthorn from Leongatha through Gippsland Power, selected second in the 2004 draft. Across 283 games, he became a versatile forward and occasional ruckman, kicked 578 goals and played in four premiership teams. He won the Coleman Medal in 2013 and later captained the club. In his retirement letter, he described arriving as a young Leongatha player and leaving as a husband, father and changed person after fifteen years. That personal reflection complements the honours list and preserves the country-town beginning of a substantial one-club AFL career.
